Heritage
Also known as the “Church of the Transfiguration” Cemetery, it is considered one of the city’s prominent historical landmarks, closely associated with the Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration—one of the oldest churches in Ramallah. The cemetery is located in the Old Town and forms part of the historical layers that reflect the deep-rooted Christian presence in the city. Its use dates to the 19th century, coinciding with the expansion of Christian communities. The Old Orthodox Cemetery is part of the collective memory of Ramallah’s residents, as it contains the graves of figures who contributed to the city’s development. The tombstones are distinguished by stone engravings bearing names and dates, offering visitors insight into the city’s demographic and religious history. Visiting the cemetery is not only a funerary experience, but also a profound spiritual journey into Ramallah’s social and cultural memory.
