Urban / Modern Symbolic
In 2016, the Ramallah Municipality inaugurated Nelson Mandela Square in honor of the former South African president, renowned for his struggle against apartheid and recognized as one of the earliest advocates for Palestinian independence. At the heart of the square stands an eight-meter-tall statue of Nelson Mandela, raising his right fist high while facing north, symbolizing his lifelong journey towards freedom. The statue is surrounded by gently curved lines resembling the shape of an arena and overlooks a spacious open plaza paved with dark gray stone. Long yellow lines encircle the monument, representing the years Mandela spent in prison. Altogether, the square and its monument embody the universal values of freedom, justice, and human solidarity.
