Urban / Symbolic
Al-Manara Square is known to be the beating heart of the city of Ramallah. Its origins date back to the late 19th century, when the site was part of a road connecting Jerusalem and Nablus. Over time, it evolved into a historic icon and symbol of the city, eventually taking its current form with the monument of the five lions, erected in the mid-1950s. The monument represents the five founding families, which gives it its historical significance, making the lion statues more than just a decorative addition. The square has become a center of daily life, public gatherings, and national events. It is surrounded by a mix of shops, markets, cafés, banks, institutions, and service centers, making it a constant meeting point for residents and visitors.
